When I did a timing chain and tensioner replacement job a few years back on a '90T auto,I had the same confusion concerning the timing marks, which did not appear to want to line up perfectly after I had removed the tensioner and rolled a new chain onto the sprockets (with wire ties). I initially tried to line up the "0" TDC timing mark on the ring gear with the timing mark on the torque converter cover and, at the same time, perfectly line up the marks on the cams with the cam bearing cover marks. Using wire ties, I knew that the chain had not jumped a tooth, but when I could not get the ring gear and cam timing marks to line up in concert after installing the new chain, I began to second guess myself. As Gene mentioned, the trick is to rotate the cam to tension the chain on the front of the engine while lining up both of the cam marks. At that point, if the chain is installed properly, the flywheel mark will be likely be off slightly. After installing the timing chain tensioner and releasing the plunger, they will line up - or at least they did for me. If your marks line up before you release the tensioner, you may have the sprockets off by a tooth. However, the caveat is that the '90T has a different engine than the '97 AERO, but I suspect the timing chain geometries are similar.
