The flex pipe sits right before the catalytic converter, and is a accordion-like piece of pipe, like a bendy-straw, covered in a steel mesh weave. As noted by others, it is NOT optional. The movement of the engine and the engine sub-frame has to be taken up somewhere. Without the flex pipe, you'll be busting other exhaust bits.
It's not a horribly expensive part bought mail order. I believe I went eEuroparts last time. It is a DIY job, but a bit of a pain. Just plan on cutting out the four bolts. I got some decent cutting wheels and an electric drill, but it took a while. Make sure the car is jacked up and supported well, and more height, the better. Ramps would be good. You might find a muffler shop that can do the job - they're pretty good at cutting off bolts. Just be careful and you don't want to be buying a cat.
I just picked up four stainless steel bolts and nuts from my local hardware store. Not sure of the size - writing that down probably would have been a good idea.
