I've done it both ways. With the axle out of the car, I've used lock-ring pliers (not snap-ring pliers) to open the ring while taping on the CV joint with a hammer. I have also taken the tripod bearing off the inner joint, then slid both boots off. If you can get the CV joint off the axle it is much easier to clean and repack, and that is my preferred method.
If you take off the tripod bearing, be extremely careful not to bump the outer races. I knocked one off once and spent a half an hour looking for needle bearings on the garage floor (this was on a Toyota, not a SAAB).
