I used to separate the CV from the axle to do boots and CV replacement and finally decided that half axle replacement sounded good. Unfortunately too good to be true. I ordered eEuro axles for a '98CSE and had them already installed and torqued before noticing that they were both 1/2" too long. Front end geometry would not allow the ball joint to reconnect. Phone call to eEuro resulted in nothing but a dull thud and a return authoriztion. I went back to doing it the way I always had.
BTW, the snap ring must not only be spread, it has to be subtlely moved around to ensure that no portion of the ring is still in the slot!
