I guess I have three reasons for repacking the joint myself. The first is it is a lot cheaper, $10 vs $84. If you are doing it by mail order, the core return adds another $10 to the cost. The second reason has to do with getting the right half-shaft configuration. The automatic versus manual thing crops up more cars more often than it should. The third is the quality of the rebuilds.
On an Acura Legend that was my daughter's car, I went through 3 half-shafts before I gave up and put on a new CV joint on the "rebuilt" unit. The first half-shaft was too short, the second clicked when turning, and the third pulled out of the transmission while I was driving. That was after I had to take a needle file and clean up the mushroomed end of the splined shaft caused, I guess, by the previous core owner. I believe that the last failure was because the rebuilder reused the lock ring on the joint.
If other people have good luck with rebuilds, that's great. It is just too random for me to fool with. When I repack my own, I can assess the amount of contamination, I know the real number of miles on the joint, and I can decide if it is time for a new CV joint.
