The door open indicator has to do with the switch below the door hinge on the car body. I think that it. It switches the door open indicator, the courtesy light and the door light.
The door inside panel is easy to remove. There are two bolts on the door pocket, two on the door handle, one on the lever, and one on the door light after the lens is removed. The only exception is on the driver side front you need to remove the side view mirror switch.
The solution to the difficulty you had with the side view mirror switch is documented in the archive. Pull the plastic tab for the left/right side mirror adjuster switch. This reveals a small piece of foam. Remove the foam. You can then use a small flat blade screw driver to move a plastic tab inside to unlock the switch to pull out.
