I also wanted add that while I agree with you that the factory finish is nearly always better than a repaint, I feel as though the finish my car was given in 1997 was not meant to last 12+ years. Like I said, it feels really soft and I can scratch away at it with a fingernail. Every time I wash my car, even with a soft sponge, I fear for my car's finish because it feels so thin.
I love my Saab and the engine is built like a tank, but the finish seems to be failing right in line with the electronics (which seem to be what the majority of the problems that come up here are). Granted, my car sits outside in the elements and it's getting up there in years. I think I'd pay upwards of $2k to save the exterior because at 145k miles, my car has a long way to go before it gets parted out.
