when was the last time you changed the auto tranny fluid in the '91?
do you prefer auto or manual? which color do you like better, interior, etc..? do you like your '91 auto?
would you trade wives/girlfriends?
both may have issues, but you have to live with one of them, make sure it's the one you're more apt to love on a daily basis.
all saab 9000s of that age/era are going to cause you some problems, if the flywheel is damaged, on the '91, that's going to be a pain, might want to consider finding a good used tranny cause obviously you'd have to remove the tranny...
how would you feel if you gave the '91 to your brother and he wound up having to pull the tranny to replace the flywheel?
it sounds to me like you don't have enough information yet.
I would change the starter and see if that solves the problem.
I would drain the tranny fluid, replace, drive for a week, drain and replace, drive for a week, then drain and replace (if you're seeing improvement, and it hasn't been changed in 20K miles or more).
See if the tranny gets better.
I'm sure someone on here will tell you how to solve the down-shifting problem if it's governor seals, or something easily repaired while the tranny is in the car. Or, if it's not a big issue, can you live with it?
Minimal rust and a wheel bearing isn't a big issue. The question would be which is more likely to fail, the TCS or the auto tranny?
I've had a 90, 92, and non-tcs 93 9000. I still have the 93. It's a great car, but by far has had the most 'problems' just in terms of parts wearing out, i don't know why, but perhaps it was just an off year. Like someone said, the 91 turbos are sought after, but do you like the auto tranny?
You have to sort out your preferences, as does your bro, and decide which is more important, the problems, potential problems, or the differences between the two cars (auto vs. manual/design/color/etc.).
