I have a 93 Turbo that I bought from a colleague approx five years ago for $200 ... and I overpaid. I own six or seven cars of various vintages (can't remember exact number since my teenage daughters keep borrowing them), do my own work, and the Saab has far and away been the most frustrating and annoying to work on. Some examples:
Traction control problems, going into "limp home" mode
ABS system blowing fuse (bad diodes)
Zero braking at one rear wheel (clogged main ABS controller)
Sticky/inoperative switches in center console
Mirror glass falling out
Electric mirror switch cracked/failed
Chronic current "leak" when car parked, running down battery (remains unsolved, though pulling ACC fuse prevents it)
Starter problems, including a "lifetime" guarantee rebuilt that was NG
Failed blower fan controller, although replacing the transistor fixed it (at least for now). Do a search on this board for details.
Leaking p/s fluid container
Leaking window washer container
Sticking front brake caliper
Perennial "light out" warning, finally solved by replacing a few zillion bulbs, restoring grounds, etc.
various ACC problems
wonky rear hatch switch that sometimes doesn't turn off the cargo light, draining the battery
Today, my teenage daughter called in a panic. As she was driving the Saab along a busy arterial during rush hour, the engine quit without warning, leaving her stuck in the right lane, blocking traffic. She couldn't get the engine to restart. I got there about 15 minutes later, and of course by that time the car started and ran flawlessly. So it's another one of those "intermittent" Saab problems that are almost impossible to diagnose unless it happens when the car is parked in the driveway. I'm not going to let my daughter drive the Saab anymore.
On the brighter side:
--engine and turbo are still sweet at 120k miles
--tranny is still good, though was replaced under warranty at about 40k
--a/c is still good
Every time I use the car I'm reminded how much I enjoy driving it ... nice balance of comfort, power, handling and utility (it's the 5-door hatchback). But I am CERTAIN that I've spent more hours repairing the car than I have driving it.
