Stiff and notchy shifter? (already replaced coupler) Posted by dbreid [Email] ![]() ![]() |
All,
I have been plagued with a stiff and notchy shifter on my 1993 Saab 9000 Aero. First, let me describe the issue. When I try to shift through the gears, putting the car in to first requires almost a "force". Instead of "sliding" in normally, I have to push it in. Same thing in Second. The other gears are better, but not by much. This takes a fair bit out of the fun of the car, because I feel like I am fighting it.
Now, I of course searched, and here's what I have found/done so far:
1.) With the car parked, and the engine OFF, the shifter changes gears perfectly and beautifully! Shifts like a dream!
2.) Because of 1.) I thought that perhaps with the car on, and the clutch in, the clutch wasn't fully engaging. So I took it to my Indy and he replaced the brake master cylinder, and bled the system. He noted that there is NO leaking from the slave cylinder, and the clutch line is the correct, updated replacement line. This fits with the previous owner's statement that the slave had been changed.
3.) I replaced the Shift coupler (this car, being a 93, has the early style with the 4 studs and the rubber piece sandwiched between two plates). This made no difference at all. The old one wasn't visibly worn, and after taking it out, it seemed OK.
4.) I checked the alignment of the shifter inside the car by inserting the 4mm screwdriver into the alignment spot when the car was in reverse.
Any ideas for what else to check?
Thanks!
