Fifteen months ago I violated one of my cardinal rules of purchasing a uses car....buy only those cars with low mileage........and I purchased a 1991 9000 with 137,000 miles on it for $2,500. The car came with twelve years of maintenance and repair receipts and one of the convincing issues re why to buy it was that many of the major components had been farily recently replaced. Since I purchased it I, and my mechanic, have installed a new exhaust system (with converter)($529), voltage regulator($94), headliner ($82), exhaust sytem heat shield ($78), and a used a/c compressor ($150). So, for a bit less than $1,000 in repairs over the past 15 months the car has turned out to be a good buy for me....and it absolutely flies on the road, gets great gas mileage, and can haul just about anything. We also have a 97 9000CSE, and while the later body style has some notable improvements, the 91 9000 is just plain more fun to drive (lower gearing ratios, lower weight, and smaller turbo that seems to spool up much more quickly).
The real key to buying a high mileage 9000 is to obtain a complete maintenance and repair history, so you can verify what has been replaced and what will be a candidate for replacement going forward.
