OK, update, and advice needed.

Thursday I pulled the Coolant Reservoir out of the car completely. I took it inside and Flushed it a little in the sink. Then I filled a huge pot (like the kind you cook Lobsters in) with Degreaser and cleaner (and some water) and boiled the whole reservoir. I did this several times, and cleaned the reservoir out GOOD. Those baffles in it really like to hold the crud!

Then I Retorqued the head (I didn't use new bolts, and yes I know the arguments... I bought new bolts, but am saving those for if I do the HG).

Observations:

1.) The top of the head looks great. No condensation in the head (which would lead me to believe that there was water getting into the oil), and nothing weird.

2.) None of the bolts were loose, but a couple of them took a few extra pounds of torque. And yes, I used an expensive digital Torque Wrench.

3.) I put in a new vale cover gasket set, and everything sealed up nicely.

So I put the whole thing back together, and ran the car to warm it up (in the driveway) and massage the hoses to get the fresh coolant moving through the system.

Then I took it for a 20 mile drive (had to do some Christmas Shopping and it was nice interstate miles), and then let it sit for about 3 hours in the parking lot. Then I drove it back home, and checked everything.

There is now definite oily sludge back in the top of the reservoir, but the car ran perfectly. No smoke from the exhaust, the Oil Dipstick is still water and milkshake free, and other than the junk in the res, everything seems good.

So questions:

1.) What ELSE besides the Headgasket could cause oil to get into the coolant?

2.) Am I missing something? I don't mind doing the HG (I have the skills and the tools), but I also don't relish doing one just for the heck of it.

:)

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for the help.

-Dan
