Question about sludge in coolant... Posted by dbreid [Email] ![]() ![]() |
All,
I have a 93 Aero 5 speed with about 180K on it. I drive it daily, and it is in excellent shape. A couple days ago, I smelled a little coolant, so I pulled over, and found the Upper Heater core hose (the one that makes a 90 degree bend out of the head and heads straight back to the firewall/aquarium) was cracked right near the head.
No big deal. The car didn't overheat, and I topped it up and went immediately home, stopping a couple times along the way (about 5 miles) to make sure it stayed topped up and cool.
I went to the dealer and bought the new hose ($60.55!!!! ouch!) and installed it.
Now, when I was filling up and flushing the coolant, I noticed some sludgey milskshakey stuff in the reservoir (Overflow tank). I rinsed it all out, but I am wondering if I might have a head gasket that is thinking about going.
Informtation:
1.) I have not replaced the headgasket (owned it a year) and I am not sure when it was last done.
2.) There seems to be no coolant in the oil. It isn't overfull, and it is clean and clear.
3.) The coolant is a total milkshake, I just see stuff floating in the reservoir.
4.) I have NOT retorqued the head.
So questions:
1.) Is my head gasket going?
2.) If it is, I'll probably just put a new one in. What else should I do on this car while I am in there? Timing Chain? Belt? Pulleys? Obviously I'd use new bolts, and a full set of gaskets (intake, etc) but just wondering what my move should be.
Or am I imagining things, and it is totally fine. The car runs perfectly, and everything seems fine otherwise.
Thanks in advance.
