Model and year information is very helpful.
As bobt notes, likely the ignition switch. If you turn the key to ON but don't get dash lights, then the electrical power bus that drives the lights isn't getting power. So what? That's the same power bus that drives the engine control computer, ignition, and fuel pump. The engine will crank just fine, but with no spark or fuel, it won't start.
The ignition switch is easy to replace. The switch is the electrical part of the key system - it is just a rotary switch bolted to the back of the key tumbler, so there is no need to replace the key lock assembly. The part is about $65 from eEuroparts, and takes about 10 minutes to replace. Do a search on ignition switch, or check out a post I did a while back-
