Did you remove the fender inner liner? Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 24 Dec 2008 05:35:01 In Reply to: Alternator replaced, what I learned. If you did remove the fender inner liner, that helps a lot. I will replace the belt on the older cars (two belt/manual tensioner) with the liner in place. But for any other operation that requires touching a belt, or anything a belt touches, and the liner comes out.
I used to curse designers for putting things in stupid places, making access difficult. As I've gotten more into hardware system integration (OK, airplanes, but still) you learn that those folks know very well about maintenance access. It's just that everything is a trade-off - move this, and three other things have to move. Then you have the optimal place for pump or a hose nipple that gets impacted. And when it comes to a bracket, it's not just a piece of metal - it has structural issues to address. It's a jigsaw puzzle with no right answer - somebody's ox always gets gored; usually a few of them. Of course, that is little comfort when you're looking at a bolt head that requires a fourth dimensional wrench.
