Please take no offense - I've given up on givens. And many designs are legacy - something else changed to make the access hard, and they didn't want to spend the money on yet more redesign.
Then again, there was a few years when the 'Mustang' (version two - a joke) required either pulling the engine or drilling a hole in the fender to replace a spark plug. And more recently, just replacing the thermostat on a 1.8l turbo VW engine requires removing the alternator and the almost mandatory breaking of the dipstick tube. I can see making an alternator replacement difficult - one should replace it between zero and one times in a car's lifetime. Thermostat? Yikes!
It sure is nice to see those pretty voltages on the EDU though, isn't it?
