I don't recall the alternator being THAT bad on my '87, and I think the '90 has the same 2L engine. I definitely didn't touch the dogbone. I feel the bottom bolt was easy and the top bolt I accessed from behind without too much difficulty, then pivoted the thing out. I did have the same wiring issue - I believe the C900 has it in the other position. I'm all but certain that my factory alternator had the woodruff key installed and I had to swap it over the the new one. The pulley was tough without an impact, but isn't there an allen key in the alternator shaft you can use? Another old trick it to use an old t-shirt wrapped around the fan blades to hold it in place - it actually works pretty well in a pinch.
