Specifc Question about timing marks on camshafts (pics) Posted by dbreid [Email] ![]() ![]() |
All,
I am in the process of replcing the timing chain (and headgasket and balance shaft chain and a bunch of other stuff) on my 1993 Saab 9000 Aero 5 speed. I have it just about ready to take apart (manifolds are off, etc) and I am marking everything and lining it up to remove the head, and I noticed something odd.
When I crank the engine to TDC (timing mark lines up with slot on the block in the flywheel hole in the tranny), I notice that, as expected:
1.) There are 15 lins between the marks on the cam sprockets.
2.) The marks on the cam sprockets line up perfectly with the arrows on the cam retaining caps.
HOWEVER, I also noticed a mark on the actual camshaft (both of them, same mark), that does NOT quite line up with the other marks. I have included pictures below:

http://www.reid.org/~dreid/Saab9000/line_up_02.jpg
to describe what I mean. I can't really figure out how to link pictures directly in a post because there is no HTML allowed.
Questions:
1.) Are those marks SUPPOSED to line up?
2.) If they aren't supposed to, what ARE they for?
Thanks, Dan
