Very grateful for the pictures. This is what I asked about last week. Unfortunately I decided to put the valve cover back on before I got a reply to my post so I could take that car to CES in Vegas over the weekend. I'm pulling the valve cover again next weekend to find out once and for all whether my timing is off.
It's still mysterious to me how my car could run so well if the timing is off, but I've heard that this is possible. I checked my plugs for the first time in several years and found them looking good, albeit with wide gaps. But the car idles as rough as ever with gaps restored to spec, and I found in Vegas that the idle much worse on a cold start (colder than in San Diego).
The big question for me is whether it is possible to move the chain a tooth over on a sprocket with only the valve cover off.
