If you're worried that the timing chain broke and the valves and pistons are hitting, just take the distributor cap off and watch if it turns when the engine cranks. If it turns, the cams are turning. Could you have jumped teeth on the cam? Possibly. These aren't non-interference engines, but that has everything to do with the valves and the pistons, and really nothing to do with ignition.

When you turn the key to ON, do you get the dash lights? If not, it likely is the ignition switch.

You pulled the EDU fuse - which one? Fuse 13 is the EDU, but also the fuel injection. Fuse 17 is the EDU, clock and ACC (if so equipped).

I'd do this-
Turn the key to ON - do you get dash lights? Crank the engine (Start) do the dash lights go out? Put a voltmeter on the fuel pump fuse - most fuses have a little cut-out on the back that you can stick a meter lead into. If you get 12 volts when the car is cranking, the switched 12 volt power bus is OK, and the fuel pump is getting fuel.

By all means, test for spark. Heck, pull the plugs and look. If they're fuel wet after cranking (and no starting), you may not have spark.

The lack of illumination does point to a bad connection on the ignition switch. No power to the fuel injection, so the injectors don't open - you'll keep plenty of fuel pressure if the injectors aren't opening.
As to the noise, it could be many things, some bad, some normal. The car did run some. If you're not getting spark, you'll be dumping fuel into the engine but not burning it. If you did dump fuel, it would get into the exhaust system. Get the engine to run, then shut it down, and you could backfire into the exhaust - now, that's a sound that'll scare the cat.

Crank the engine, watch the lights, and then pull a spark plug or two. Gas wet? Pull the distributor cap and make sure you've got a rotor, and that it turns when the engine cranks. A really good way to check for spark is to throw a timing light onto the engine. I assume you've got a timing light, otherwise who knows what the timing is set to. If you don't have one, beg, borrow, buy or steal one. It's tough to check the timing if the engine isn't running.

It takes air, gas, and spark to run. Assuming the air filter isn't iced up and you can breath, there is air. Check the throttle position - make sure it isn't frozen open - a full open throttle won't let the engine run, but it'll allow it to crank real fast. Then check for fuel and spark.
