Well, that obviously a bad sign. Worst case, a connection rod has blown through the block. Best case, a backfire into the crankcase popped the bottom of the dipstick tube out. Somewhere in the middle is a main seal was blown out.
Step 1 - what's your oil level like? If it's low, don't try and star the car with low oil. If it's way too high then coolant has leaked into the crank.
Step 2 - checking the distributor is easy single-handed. Pull the cap off, and note which way the rotor is pointing (and check the condition). Crank the engine a time or two, and then look again. Yes you can just leave the cap off, but be aware that the rotor should turn. If the rotor is in a different place, you know it turned.
Given the oil situation, you don't want the car to start if you don't know where the oil is coming from. You could run the engine with no oil (bad), or start the car, and it'll pump all the oil out (bad, just a few seconds later).
No, not a good situation. But first figure out what is wrong, and go from there. If the engine is shot, you can always drop in a used motor. Saab engines are pretty robust, and tend to outlive the bodies. So if the car is in decent shape, that may be cheaper than repair if the engine damage was major.
As soon as it gets warmer (hopefully soon), get in there with a good light. Don't worry much about where the puddle is - oil flows. Start with the block and go from there. Don't forget there is oil to the turbo, and to the oil cooler - those are lines that might have failed.
