My experience is the same as Noel's. The only time I've had leaks was when what I'd call the tray round the sliding bit corroded, and water came into the car instead of going down the drains. Of course, blocked drains will have the same effect because the tray fills up and water falls over the edge. Wouldn't be surprised if your previous owner encountered one of these problems.
If you open the little hatch behind the interior light there is or ought to be a crank you can use to operate the roof manually. It's intended for emergencies, obviously.
Finally, all my sunroofs have had the "design feature" Noel mentions whereby the first pull backwards on the switch takes the roof back 90% of the way, then you have to do it again for the last bit. This is even mentioned in the handbook but I've never discovered a good reason for it. But you don't have to run the roof right back before you run it forward or close it, you can do that at any stage.
