You should be able to do this in situ. Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Stripped Exhaust Stud Hole, AeroAndy, Mon, 20 Apr 2009 11:54:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is something that can be done without removing the head. You are fortunate that there is no stud to remove because it is difficult to drill out a hardened stud in a soft aluminum block. If you have a right angle drill you will be able to get in there without removing the radiator. You should remove the exhaust manifold to get a clean shot at the hole.
I would use Helicoil inserts, but every time suggest them, other members jump on me and say they are outdated technology. I have two Helicoil fasteners in the head on my 1991 9000T, and one in the block on my 1990 9000T, and have never had any problems. A kit and a drill bit will run your around $30. If you don't feel comfortable with the spring-type inserts, there are the Time-Sert fasteners mentioned elsewhere. These are excellent fasteners, but after drilling the initial hole, there is an additional counter-bore step to accommodate the shoulder on the insert. For a one shot fastener, that is more money for start up.
There are also key-lock, Re-Nu-Thread and EZ-Lok, which are all non-spring type inserts. Take a spin through the MSC catalog (MSCDIRECT) and pick out one you like.
