I converted to automatics with my first 9000 after a lifetime of "proper" sports cars (and some column-change 96s). Would never go back. I positively love the combination of turbo engine and A/T, and my work vehicle, a VW Transporter Kombi van, has a 6-speed Tiptronic box.

I find I hardly ever use the Tiptronic feature - just to pick a lower gear down long hills, maybe - but I do use the Sport mode when I want to get a move on, and on small roads like thopse round here in Somerset.

You might find the British roads both fuller and slower than when you lived in Oxfordshire! Speed limits everywhere you look. I drive into London a couple of times most weeks, and manual transmission would be a killer, average speeds seldom exceed 11 mph.

We are now fitting more traffic lights at roundabouts, which defeats their purpose, but is a reaction to higher traffic volumes and the fact that drivers seem less cooperative than they used to be, less likely to filter or give way.
