Last week we just had the manual transmission replaced, on our 1991 9000 with 156,000 miles, with a rebuilt unit from Eriksson Industries in Connecticut (our local independent mechanic did the job). Cost was $1,860 for the transmission (delivered to NJ)(12 month unlimited mileage warranty by Eriksson), plus 6 1/2 hours labor ($528) to remove the old trans and install the new one. One issue with the 91 9000s was that used transmissions would have to be from a 1992 or earlier car, and finding a used unit with reasonably low mileage was a big problem. We also wound up having a new clutch, clutch master, throwout bearing, clutch line, and clutch slave unit installed when the job was done, since we viewed also replacing those parts as relatively cheap insurance re not having to pull the trans going forward again.
Clutch on our 1994 9000 Aero self destructed a number of years back at 80,000 miles, so the Saab transmissions would not quite be viewed as indestructible based upon our experiences.
