So, I've had a '93 Aero in storage for about four years. The head gasket blew in mid '06 and I decided it would be prudent to check out the rest of the car to make sure it was worth paying someone to fix, as at that time I was not at all mechanically inclined. Inspection of the rear shock towers found rust on both. The cost of having the HG repaired at a shop plus the original clutch is near finished at 210,000km, and sundry other minor items prompted me to write car off. I figured I'd slowly part it out and get rid of the carcass.
That never happened, and now that I'm considerably more mechanically adept and hungry for projects, I'm going to bring it back to life with the help of a welder friend to fix the shock towers!
The only fluids ever in the cooling system while I owned the car were Mercedes coolant and distilled water. That's been sitting mixed with Mobil 1 in the bottom end for four years... the car has very occasionally been started and run to move from one parking spot to another in the car park.
I figure I should be OK if I drain everything, fix the HG, thoroughly flush the cooling system and run it on just distilled water for a bit to make sure everything is solid and clean, and do a few 500km oil change intervals to clean all the yack out... once everything looks happy and is draining clean, go back to my old 5000km oil change intervals with Mobil 1 and go back to the 50/50 Mercedes coolant/distilled water mix in the cooling system.
Thoughts?
Also, the starter motor is on the way out... half the time the starter gear doesn't engage the flywheel and it just spins the motor. I have a good spare pulled from an '88 900 T16... are they compatible?
I've done a HG on a 900, anything notably different on a 9000? I don't have any service manuals for the 9000... any online HG guides?
Finally, the check engine light is indicating an 02 sensor code. Perhaps this is from sitting so long and burning coolant when it was occasionally started, that sort of thing, and it might clear with a bit of normal driving after it's fixed up? Or do I need to go borrow a Tech II? I have a spare O2 sensor from a '91 900 T16, is that compatible?
Thanks so much!
