Although your mechanic wasn't fast, he figured out the problem rather than spend your money replacing good parts.
DI cassettes just go bad. My '96 is on its third cassette. The first died at 84,000 miles when it was about 7 years old. I installed the 3rd cassette about 6 years later at 152,000 miles. The second cassette still works, and I keep it in the hatch as a spare.
If you plan to keep the car, then buy a new DI cassette and a used one. Verify that the used one works, then keep it as a spare in your hatch (and make sure you know how to install it). There's some oil inside the DI cassette, and the spare cassette should be stored standing upright. If you plan to sell, then buy one used cassette. Make sure you get the red DI cassette, not the black one.
Tell your mechanic to smear a little dab of dielectric grease around the end of each of the four boots on the DI cassette. The grease prevents misfires and makes the cassette easier to install/remove.
