Engine stalls above 10,000 feet

For the past several days I've been driving my '92 straight 9000 (non-turbo), 5 speed, from southern Illinois headed for San Luis Obisop CA.

Just as I exited the Eisenhower Tunnel (west of Denver on I-70), elevation over 11,000 feet, the engine died. It was a downhill grade, so I coasted, in gear for a couple miles before finding a suitable turn-out to park. At first I thought it was the fuel pump. The engine surged a couple times then quit. Even coasting down hill in gear would not bring it back to life. Outside temp was in the low 60's, the car did not get hot on the climb up to the tunnel, nothing else unusual, it just quit. After sitting about 15 minutes, I tried the starter and it fired up like nothing had happened.

After that the car ran fine until yesterday when I again went above 10,000 feet in Great Basin National Park. Same thing. A couple of surges, then zip, nada, dead. I coasted down hill a couple thousand feet and the engine started and ran just fine.

Any idea what's causing this problem?

I purchased this car new. It has had excellent maintenance and looks and runs great. It's been several years since I drove it at these elevations, but it never had this sort of problem before.
