I think if you can get away from the idea of plugging the hole, and, instead, think about patching the hole, it makes the whole job easier.
The transmission case is cast aluminum for two reasons, strength and ease of creating a complex three dimensional object. If the hole is small enough and not in a critical section, then your only worry is how to keep the transmission fluid, or motor oil in your case, from leaking out on to the ground. A small piece of aluminum, no thicker than 1/16 of an inch, can be fastened over top of the case material as a patch. Using a MIG or TIG welder to hold the patch in place would be nice, but the epoxy solution has some merit in that it will fill the imperfections between the plate and the case better than a weld.
The only other item to consider is if there is sufficient clearance for a patch to be put in place. We already know that a bolt does not have sufficient clearance, but is a thin plate alright?
