Adjusting shift coupler - try this first! Do you know that there is an adjustment required to align the shift lever with the transmission? On my 1994, one tries to put the car into a certain gear (don't remember which offhand), inserts a pin (used a large nail) in a hole on the top side of the trans, loosens the coupler, inserts a pin at the shifter housing, then tightens everything up. The alignment can change due to various issues (mounts deteriorating is one, replacement with a different unit is another), and I would not write off a transmission until you tried an alignment first.
