...it begins to show some movement. Then get it moving by a little harder tapping, then cross two screwdrivers and use them to twist it all the way out.
Noel, I think you said the pump has been out in the past? With any luck they lubed the ring and the threads so it will want to move.
I pulled a fuel pump from the '96 a tree fell on, before the scrap yard hauled it off. Used one of my biggest fat screwdrivers but I think a piece of square rod or something else blunt ended would have been better.
I had to do a lot of tapping with a hammer on the screwdriver, never treated any one of the ribs as if I was trying to make that one be the one that pushed the ring free, but went all around the ring tapping first to free things up, more than one time around, till the ring seemed to show some motion. Moved around, tapping now near side, now far side, to create some play. Be patient. Then once it moved I hit a little harder, and it was really moving, so I moved across the ring to another rib and tapped more, then crossed two long screwdrivers, tips on ribs on opposite sides of the ring, and it was like child's play getting the ring out. That ring was probably the original, in for nearly 16 years. Total maybe 5 minutes of tapping.
The problem with the screwdriver tip is that it wants to act like a chisel and dig into the rib and ring and risks chiseling a rib off. Ergo something more blunt. The homemade PVC tool looks great but I could probably take the rings off five cars my way, maybe more, in the time it would take me to make it.
