If your car is designed to run on regular, you gain nothing by using premium.
If your car is designed to run on premium, you get both better performance and better gas mileage, but on a modern car, you can use regular and you won't hurt anything. The car will dial itself back till it doesn't ping.
You can get the best of both worlds by splitting the difference and using 1/2 tank of regular and 1/2 tank of premium.
