I see lots of reports of excellent mileage on this BB, also on C900 board, that I can't come close to.
My 96 CSes, three of em, all automatics, seem to get usually 21 mpg in mixed driving, 23+ a bit at best on long trips with cruise control, a little worse in winter.
This is an average, calculating at every tankful, gallons bought to click-off divided by miles traveled since last fillup. The averaging is very important, you can use a pump that convinces you the tank is full and put well less than as much gas in as it had at last fillup.
I try to keep my tires pretty firm, 35 psi, sometimes up to 40 psi.
The terrain here is coastal New England but lots of hills, and the temps much of the year are probably not optimal for best gas mileage.
I try to cut some slack to other drivers, figuring they can keep their foot off the gas better than I can, but I really doubt some reports. If you are only reading your car's running estimate of gas mileage, right there you're being way overoptimistic, that is fantasy-land. And some people have theirs set for IMPERIAL gallons when using US gallons in reality, and that gives a way higher reading.
Obviously, 5 speeds are going to do better than automatics.
