No, Bill, the old module wasn't bad, it just had SRS showing on the dash because, when I got the car, doing the diligent thing, I went through the fuse panel one at a time to check that none were blown and that all were the right value... BEFORE I learned that simply pulling the SRS fuse with the battery still connected makes it set an error, which needs the special tool to re-set.
The replacement came from a sound-looking '96 Aero in the junkyard, the battery of which was already out and gone.
I don't think they EVER reset on their own, no matter time elapsed.
I'm hoping my car doesn't have any tendency to set SRS codes on its own, as yours seems to. Your spare module could be a temporary way to get yours reset without a trip to an indy; I'm not sure it would be any better than your present one at resisting new error messages.
Do, however, be forewarned against pulling SRS fuse unless battery is disconnected.
