I have all 4 clips, and you're right that 4 is overkill and probably contributed to the separation problem. Especially if the window wasn't rolled all the way down. I'm going to try one near each end and one at the center. Thanks for the idea!
3M has a handy search engine (linked below) to help find an adhesive based on the materials to be bonded. I know the trim piece is plastic. I know that the leather-covered surface was NOT glued to the trim piece. I don't know what is the material that was molded to form the door panel's shell. It looks like some kind of paperboard 1/8" thick. Any idea what this stuff is?
When I plug "plastic and paper" or "plastic and wood" into the 3M search engine, then it does not recommend 3M Spray Trim Adhesive. However, the search engine doesn't know that this is an automotive application. Also, no matter what material you select to bond to plastic, the engine never recommends 3M Spray Trim Adhesive.
I'm going to try 3M's chat feature and see what a 3M rep says. I'll post what 3M's rep advises.
