Might be better to prepare a tool for turning the ring. A 6" square piece of 3/4 plywood can be made into a tool. Trim the width to fit inside the ring and against the tabs. Making a broad cutout in the bottom to clear the fuel tubes and fittings. Make handles with vise grips, crescent wrenches, or whatever you have to turn the plywood tool. I used a 16" long piece of 1" angle iron 'C' clamped to the plywood to make handles.
Use wide jaw pliers or vice grips to lift the fuel fittings straight up, do not pry on them. Brace yourself so the fitting does not get banged around when it comes loose. Any stress in the corner of the fuel fitting can cause it to crack.
