I've done this twice. The first time I spent a long time cleaning up the threads with the appropriate sized die, running it up and down, which is not easy because there's not much room to get in there. After an hour or two of this I managed to shear the bolt anyway. The second time I just sheared the bolt right away and ground off the captive head of the bolt in the floor of the trunk. I replaced it with a new bolt (you need a helper here to hold the head of the bolt while you wrench on the nut from below).
If you have an angle grinder, the second method is a lot quicker and easier.
