Haynes manual is pretty useless! Thanks, I should not have wasted my money on the Haynes manual, I never even use it at this point. This is the first time I've bothered to try it for anything in a while and once again came up with a big goose egg. There's much better info here on Saabnet and elsewhere online.
I'll check for that connector under the carpet flap. Since it's the common 10-pin connector used for switches I assume the pin numbering will be the same as those. I'll definitely try that adapter cable, it would be great if more definitive codes can be pulled with an OBD-II scanner. (Of course those can lead you down the primrose path as well, as I found out on my '97 when an O2 sensor problem threw an "engine slow to warm up" code.)
I went ahead and disconnected the battery and will leave it that way a couple of hours to clear everything out and see if Check Engine comes back on. I've gone through the ECU re-adaption when installing a new battery on my '97, not really that a big deal. A bigger PITA is having to reset the EDU units, the clock, and the stored radio stations!
