When you turn the key to the start position to run the starter motor, a gear on the starter motor is extended out about an inch to engage the engine flywheel (a large geared circular plate bolted to the end of the engine - about 1.5 feet in diameter). Once the engine is started, you release your hard from the starting position (a spring is there). That causes the starter motor gear to retract from the flywheel since it did it's job in starting the engine. If you turn the key to the starting position with the engine running, the starter gear will be extended into the already spinning flywheel and it will make a very loud and bad sound. Basically its gears hitting each other. You probably didn't do any damage if you just did this once. If you did it a lot of times, the gears would get broken teeth and the engine might not start.
