What Bernie and Rob in his second post say is what happened. There's a little piece of the ignition switch made of soft pot metal that sometimes breaks off if you turn the key to the stopping point with vigor. That holds the end of the return spring and if it's snapped the spring won't do its job.
Until you get a new switch installed you may still use the car but you will need to be very careful to always back the key away from the start position to the run position, as you have been doing.
What can happen if you get forgetful or if the key re-engages the starter while you've got the engine running, is, the engine engaged with the starter drive will spin the starter too fast, or over-run it, and that can quickly ruin the starter too.
You can buy the new switch from (I think) Eeuroparts online or other online sellers. Your garage can do the changing.
There's a black plastic cover that comes off the bottom of the steering column. Then there are two SMALL metric allen screws that release the electrical switch from the back of the key cylinder. Then you might also need to nip open a zip tie that holds the wiring bundle leading to the switch, to free it up enough to easily unplug. The plug is massive, six or eight big bullet connector prongs, in two rows.
