One very easy check: is it a turbo or not? Take a look at the exhaust manifold which is on the front of the engine (that rust-colored thing bolted onto the cylinder head, near the top). Is there a complicated system of air ducts, tubes and hoses (turbo engine), or does it go straight into an exhaust pipe (normally aspirated engine).
If it's a normally aspirated engine, then it will certainly have less power than the turbo engines that you are used to on your previous 9000s. If it's a turbo, there are many issues that will cause it not to perform correctly.
