Shift Seal Replacement and Other Work?

Got my '93 9000 CSE last month and noticed the gearbox oil level was below the dipstick. I see fresh oil seeping out the boot that goes around the shift seal on the transmission. It has 155k and don't think it was ever replaced. The seal is the type with a metal shroud and apparently requires care to replace without damage. I will use the 5/8" deep well socket approach to maintain alignment.
I have a few questions though..
Does this seal seat against a lip in the bore? I ask because I read several posters warn 'don't press the seal in too far or you will bind up the internals.' On mine, the metal ring around the seal sticks out from the face of the casting by about 4-5mm. Enough to hook the book over. I wonder if it was not fully installed but will find out for sure once I get the parts in and can measure the depth of the seal body.
Expect to replace the rubber coupler for the linkage while I am down there. I know there is a tachometer seal in that area but it seems ok but if they are prone to leaking, will replace it as well. Anything else I should do at that same time. Thanks!
