I spoke to a SAAB expert in a larger city to give me some guidance on how to remove the seal. I asked about access and he suggested removal of the battery, which I already had done, should provide enough access. There is still stuff to work around. One thing I stumbled on was what gear to put the transmission in. The '93 is an an between transmission borrowing for previous years for some features but not all. In my case, there is no alignment hole on the transmission adjacent to the shaft, similar to '92 and earlier models. However, the shifter alignment is for 4th gear, like future years. Anyway, I did set the 4th gear on the transmission with a punch mark on the transmission casting and one on the coupler end that aligned with the transmission mark. The fore/aft movement of the gear selection shaft (1-2, 3-4) is considerable but side to side movement 1-3, 2-4, appears to be minimal. I think I will leave the pinch clamp somewhat tight but not fully, and use the slippage to help get the gears aligned.
I hit the taper pin that secures the coupler to the shifter shaft with some Aero Kroil. Not sure how much it helps but I figured it would not hurt. It came out with several light taps of a ball peen hammer. I backed out the nut so it would be the carrier of the force rather than the pin itself.
I also hit the metal shift shaft seal body with Kroil. I tried a screwdriver and mangled the body a bit. I could see that I lacked finesse. Again the guidance of the SAAB expert came in handy by reminding me of the factory tool that engaged the metal ridge of the seal to pop it out. I thought of sheet metal wrench I have for bikes and that was a little flimsy. I then tried a sheet metal wrench that was supplied with my table saw for changing the blade. The arbor wrench was .875 across and fit the seal perfectly. A couple of tugs and it popped out. Here is a photo showing the roughly 180 degree engagement with the ridge. Good luck if you have to do this job.
