5W may have been too thin for turbos 20 years ago, but with modern synthetics that have high hot viscosity numbers that's not an issue anymore.
I have been using first 5W-50 and now 0W-40 (both Mobil 1) in our '96 9000CS 2.0LPT since new, and I regularly cruise at topspeed. The car now has 100K miles on it and there has been no problems at all with the engine.
One of my friends build racecar engines and he specializes in turbo engines. I think it says a lot that he uses 5W-50 in his own turbodiesel which has a max boost of 35 PSI.
