Your worst-case cost on a transmission is about $2600. That's the price of a quality rebuilt transmission, installed. If the problem is a simple broken/weak spring in the valve body, then you're looking a a couple of hundred dollars if you pay a shop.
When the car shudders, what is the RPM, and where is the turbo boost needle? Do you see the problem at a particular RPM?
My thought is that if you feel the shudder as the turbo boost needle reaches the upper end of the yellow band, then the problem may be as simple as needing new spark plugs, or having the old ones regapped. If the plugs are too old, or the gap too big, the engine will misfire at higher boost levels.
Does the transmission shift OK otherwise? When you go from neutral into drive, does it THUNK, or is it smooth? How does it downshift from 4 to 3 - smoothly, or is there a pause? Does it shift up through the gears at the proper speeds? If the tranny is otherwise shifting properly, I'd guess it's an ignition/timing/fuel issue that could be tracked down. But let us know more, like the boost level, engine RPM, etc. When it shudders, what does the RPM do?
good luck
