I have a 1991 9KS that had a similiar problem as well. My car would run fine and then once of a sudden it would decide to die wherever it [the car] felt like dying. After 15 -30 minutes later, the car would fire up and I would be good to go. My problem was cured after the crankshaft sensor was replaced.
Obviously, you have to eliminate which system is giving you problems - fuel or iginition. I have heard of a quick way to see if the ignition system is working (note: I never tried this check with my problem) - when the problem occurs, crank the engine over with the ignition key. If the tachometer is not bouncing around during start up, I believe one can concluded that you have a problem with one of the components in the ignition system. As for checking the fuel pump when the problem occurs, run a jumper wire from the hazard fuse(going from memory here - I believe it is fuse # 22 on a 1991 9K)or another 12V source to fuse #14 (fuel pump fuse) and see if you here the pump running. Caution: don't run the pump to long - I don't think it will be to healthy for it. If the pump is still running when the car doesn't start I would conclude that most likely the other fuel management components are fine as well.
Hope this helps.
Once you have the problem cured - please post what the "headache" was. Thanks and good luck!!
