When you did them yourself, I presume you lubed the caliper slide pins properly? It can certainly make a difference as to how smoothly the brakes operate... Still, I'm not discounting what you say, I believe the Saab pads have a lower metallic content, and it seems common sense to think that less metal on metal is a good thing for smoothness..
I will say that the Frictiontech pads did seem a little smoother than the Metal masters, but nowhere near the stopping power under HARD braking.
