Your vehicle probably runs fine without an O2 sensor, But, It should have one. The O2 sensor trims the fuel mixture. I guess you could say it complements the AMM in a way. It detects the Oxygen in the Exhaust. It lets the ECU know if it's running lean or rich.
I have fitted a new O2 sensor to my 89 9000T and I noticed little if any difference to it. I have made a portable O2 sensor that I can Shove into the rear of the Exhaust and see if my car is running too lean or too rich. It seems though that I have a problem. My car is running way to lean.
You can easily check with a multimeter if your O2 sensor is working.
You have 3 wires from the O2 sensor. The 2 white ones are for the heater. The single on (Black I think) is the Output of the O2 sensor. If you connect the Positive wire from your Multimeter to this wire and your Negative lead to ground, Set your meter to read Millivolts DC, You will be able to see if your engine is running lean or rich. It will be a Varying signal between 100 millivolts and 1 volt.
100 - 400, the engine is running lean.
600 - 1 volt the Engine is running rich.
400 - 600 is normal.
An Analogue meter is probably easier to read.
I have made up a LED Bargraph meter to read my O2 sensor output. I have it hooked up permanently and It works really well.
I just thought I would put my 2 cents worth in..
Damian.
