I just had to share this with everyone...
When I bought my '95 Aero, I thoroughly researched it on this board before I signed on the dotted line. I learned what all the major problems were, and my dealer sold me an extended warranty that would cover all of those problems. The warranty presented itself as using only OEM parts, and this was important to me because that is all I use. Until last week, the warranty company was pretty good about covering the repairs- there were a few bumps in working with them, but nothing major.
Anyways, last week it was time to do a few big jobs, including the motor mounts and the heater core (I was tired of that subtle smell of Prestone in my cabin!) The car also needed a new CV joint. My mechanic called the warranty company to OK the work- they insisted he use a NAPA REBUILT CV JOINT in my car!! The OEM joint was $300.00, the NAPA was $93.00! I called them to express my displeasure that they wanted to put junk in my Aero. They told me there was a clause buried in my contract that said the warranty company could put aftermarket parts on a car my age/mileage ('95/80,000 miles). I went ballistic because I was never informed of that fact and would never have paid good money for a warranty that was putting junk on my car.
I asked the person on the phone whether it was worth it to them to lose my business over $200 for every car I buy in the future. He told me, "Well, yes." In disbelief, I hung up the phone and told my mechanic to put the OEM part on and I'd pay the difference. He calls me back twenty minutes later to tell me he checked with NAPA and found they don't even offer an aftermarket CV joint for the Aero. The warranty company went ballistic, called NAPA, found he was correct, and then had to follow another tiny clause in their contract- when there is no aftermarket alternative, the OEM part must be used!
So, now I sit here looking at the $300.00 CV joint on my mechanic's invoice and chuckle to myself. You have no idea how good it feels! Total repair bill came to $1,800. I paid nothing.
My warranty company was MasterGuard. They won't be my warranty company anymore after this car.
Just had to share that!
