I agree with Is that all extended warranties are like this, and I've only bought one so far, a $500 3-year contract for my '86 9KT from my dealer salesperson who was trying to win some trip to Hawaii by selling a certain number of them. There is a huge mark-up on them at the time and she waived her commission, which was $300-500 as I recall.
I used it to replace the alternator, starter, and turbo unit--and only for the latter did they give me a hard time. The seal was leaking sporadically causing excessive smoking at times, but they claimed that didn't warrant replacing it. After repeated phone calls and nagging them to death, they relented, probably to get me off their back. I will likely never buy another one of these contracts again, as I feel the likelihood of getting you money back in repairs, factoring in interest, is slim. They're in it for a profit, and that means your odds aren't good to meet your payment amount or greater.
I also agree with Quasi that aftermarket rebuilt parts aren't necessarily junk, and I've used some in the past with excellent results. I would insist on a decent warranty on these parts, however.
